With a tagline like ‘The Ideal 4WD’, the imagination really runs wild
especially when the new Perodua Nautica was cheekily referred to as the
“Naughty Car” by Perodua’s MD Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz bin Syed Abu Bakar.
For a special glimpse of the new car, members of the media were recently
treated to a preview of the Nautica at Genting Highland.
Naughty or not, with monthly sales forecast of 100 – 200 units, the
Nautica will be a low volume seller compared to other Perodua models but
will nevertheless cheer up Perodua’s showrooms which have been stocked
with numerous colours of its best selling units – the Mvvi and the Viva.
Brought in as a CBU unit from Japan, the upcoming Perodua Nautica 4WD is
equipped with a fulltime 4WD with centre differential lock powered by
the 1.5 L 3SZ-VE with Dynamic Variable Valve Timing (DVVT) DOHC EFi.
The short 7.5 KM drive around Genting Highland revealed a few things.
The engine struggled when floored going uphill in D but a quick fix is
available by shifting to either 2 or L on the gear console. On the
twisty turns of Genting, the ride is comfortable and the soft suspension
setup takes bumps and potholes in its stride. Unfortunately, the
fulltime 4WD was never fully-tested since there was no off-road test
route available during the quick test drive.
The steering wheel on the Nautica looked oddly out of place compared to
the rest of the dashboard which is not entirely a bad thing. Locating
the light grey steering wheel was so much easier due to its very
contrasting interior which was a dark shade of grey. Steering the topic
aside, the Nautica was also among the few first in Perodua models to be
equipped with a Multi-information display, a flexible Bee-Type antenna
and a movable ashtray.
Aside from its shorter wheelbase and the Perodua logos upfront and on
the spare tire cover it was very similar in appearance exterior-wise to
the recently launched Toyota Rush.
Medallion Grey and Majestic Black are the colours the Nautica is offered
in and it is expected to be priced around RM 90K – RM 95K with bookings
accepted from 10 May 2008 onwards.
For those who are interested to know how naughty the Nautica can really
get, watch this space for a thorough first drive report.

i dont know what perodua is thinking! are they trying to kill their market with the price of nautica? they R supposed to build car for the mid & lower income market. not build something for the mid - high income market! F.Y.I Perodua = Perusahaan Automobile Kedua, not meant to tackle proton market. i rather buy Toyota rush instead, got 5+2 seater. then buy the spareparts for nautica if toyota parts expensive. Perodua LOL
